How to find an angel investor for startups?

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Once the idea for a business emerges, the most challenging phase has just begun. How do you fund your business, if you can't fund it yourself? The answer is angel investors. Generally, they are investors that provide fiscal aid to small startups or entrepreneurs. Some provide one and done installations of cash whereas others will offer continuing funding. The trouble is that competition for investors is stiff and many angel investors receive high volumes of proposals daily. Therefore, a strong strategy is your best friend when entering this entrepreneurial battlefield.

Compile a list of possible investors. When job hunting, you apply for companies in your field. By focusing on companies that would appreciate your skills and resume, you increase the risks of getting an interview. The same rule applies when searching for angel investors. Search for investors that have invested in your field. The list should contain about 30-50 investors. If for some reason the fish aren't biting, expand the net wider.

Ask fellow entrepreneurs. Sometimes it's best to get advice from someone who's in the trenches with you. Find entrepreneurs that are in your field, but not competitors. Show them your list of investors and ask if they can think of any names to add. The worst that could happen is that they don't have anyone else to add. At best, they'll point you in the direction of a few good connections.

Make connections. After the list is complete, attempt to find a connection between you and the investor. Whether they be friends, family, or work connections, it is always better to have an introduction. Otherwise, try your hand at a cold introduction, but it is always better to know someone. If it's early in the game and you can't seem to find a way to get in contact with certain investors, we provide connections to angel investors and a wealth of related information.

Just remember that while there are many people searching for investors, there are just as many investors looking for startups. Use networks like ours and the chances of connecting with the right investor increases. So don't give up on the struggle that lies ahead. There are great tools out there to help you and your business get to where you want to be.
